Programme Structure

ProEtnica 2008 undertakes to provide the ethnic communities of Romania the opportunity to present all areas of their life to a broad public using diverse cultural and academic forms of portrayal and representation.

Thus, the festival programme features 5 thematic areas:

1.) In the area of cultural academic studies, taking place daily from 11:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 17:00, are lectures, round table discussions, symposiums, etc. On the other hand, book presentations, theatre pieces and similar events oriented to a relatively smaller public are also offered.

2.) The performing arts programme takes place daily from 17:00 to 24:00 and comprises four areas:
traditional folk dance, folk music, and choirs perform on the main stage located on the citadel square.
One of the basic principles of ProEtnica is to stimulate interaction one the one hand between the ethnic communities and the festival visitors by offering an interactive stage located at the museum square.

3.) On the other hand, we also want to stimulate interaction between the individual ethnic groups. Thus, between 21:00 and 21:30 the main stage is reserved for collective cross-cultural events.
Likewise with regard to promoting interaction, an interethnic ball takes place following the stage program. By offering this, we give the participants and visitors the opportunity to interact in an informal context.

4.) Fine arts exhibitions by contemporary artists from the ranks of Romania’s ethnic communities will be organised in various spaces within and without the Sighisoara citadel. In addition, every partner organisation has an information stand and a craftsman market will fill the quiet and quaint citadel lanes and alleys with life.

5.) The fifth area is dedicated to the project MELT - Migration in Europe and Local Traditions, in which ibz is a partner. Musicians and cultural experts from the MELT partner cities will be joining us. In this context, a public music workshop as well as a round table discussion in English will both be organised dealing with the project topic.
