 Hungarian Traditions in Sighisoara
by Annika Domokos
from Sighisoara
The exhibition opening will take place on Friday, the 22nd August at 18:00
Brief History of the Hungarians from Sighisoara
In 1781 Kaiser Joseph II pronounced the edict allowing foreigners to settle in Sighisoara.  Hereupon, Hungarians also began to settle here; by 1861 their numbers already amounted to 866. Since they had settled permanently and held various jobs, the Romanian-Catholic Hungarians had already set up a school for native Hungarian speakers in 1876. The other confessions soon followed: Reformed and Unitarians. In 1880 there was a state Hungarian grammar school.
With the construction of the railroad many Hungarians migrated to the town, especially from Szekely land so that by 1891 there was already a population of 1630. By the end of the 19th century, in the course of the industrialisation of the town, their numbers reached 2,000. The make-up of the Hungarian population is not uniform. “We” Sighisoareans come, for the most part, from the Szekely area, Cristuru Secuiesc, Sângeorgiu de Pădure, Vetca Badoș, Jacod and from many other villages. Settled in a Transylvanian-Saxon town, they also adapted to the Hungarians and adopted some of the customs of the Transylvanian Saxons, such as being organised by neighbourhoods. Currently, there are 5932 Hungarians in Sighisoara who belong to the three large confessions: 1500 Catholics, 2129 Reformed, 1083 Unitarians. The other 1200 belong to other religions or denominations. The exhibition attempts to present a fraction of this diversity: the exhibition items are grouped according to old and new. "Tradition and Modernity” contains traditional costumes from various regions and household objects in the spirit of the MELT project.

 Synagogues of Southern Transylvania
Photo Exhibition
by Christian Binder, Photography and Julie Dawson, Concept Design
In the wake of the Holocaust and the subsequent mass migration of the vast majority of Romania’s Jewish population, this country’s countless synagogues have fallen into various stages of disrepair and decay over the years. This photo exhibition attempts to capture the interesting transitional stage in which Romania now finds itself – with the entrance of outside, foreign investors and NGOs, some synagogues have been or are being restored and turned into cultural centres or finding other alternative uses. Others remain abandoned, often assuming a central location in the town’s centre, an evocative, stubborn reminder of recent past – and of today’s reluctance to address Romania’s troubled relationship with this history.
The questions are numerous – what will become of these buildings now that they can be used again? Will their respective towns take responsibility for their upkeep, how can they be integrated into a long-term plan for urban or rural renewal? And how can the countless still decrepit synagogues, many of significant historical and architectural value, be incorporated into a systematic and far-reaching plan for commemorating and celebrating a culture formerly a vibrant part of Romania’s multi-cultural existence?

Crafts & Presentation Stands
Once again the Museum Square will host the work of traditional craftsmen from the ranks of the ethnic communities and presentation stands from the same. Hours are from 10:00 to 18:00.

The Democratic Union of Slovaks and Czechs from Romania presents
 Ioan Keles with Traditional Embroidery
from Nădlac, Arad county
Embroidery is one of the oldest occupations for country women, especially in the winter whilst sitting alongside the warm stove and gossiping. The embroidery work varied in colour and design from region to region.
After the invention of sewing machines, these were also adapted for embroidery. Embroidery performed with sewing machines is more delicate and refined than that done by hand.
Embroidery can be divided into many categories:
  • - simple embroidery,
  • - full embroidery
  • - “Richelieu” embroidery
  • - “Madeira” embroidery etc.
Many sorts of various materials are worked with, but cotton is the best to use. There are two kinds of thread, one made from cotton and one from synthetic yarn. The embroidery from cotton is wider and more durable but not as delicate and lustrous as that made from synthetic materials.
All embroidery is ironed from the inside, the material is well-stretched and the embroidery appears raised.
Unfortunately this tradition is slowly being lost and is being taken over by automatic computerised embroidery which can no longer be labelled hand-embroidery but rather is mass-produced.
The Democratic Union of Slovaks and Czechs from Romania presents
Dovaly Ana Carolina
from Nădlac, Arad County
Typical for the Slovakian community is the ornamenting of vessels with threads in which different shapes and colours are used.
The main occupation of Slovaks from Nădlac has always been agriculture, in particular corn cultivation. As a result, a unique craftwork developed based on using corn plants as the original material.  Various products were manufactured for usage in local households, as well as for decoration such as figures representing both peasants as well as religious personages.
The German Democratic Forum of Sighisoara presents
Transylvanian-Saxon Traditional Costume
by Walter Daniel.
How can one recognise the home of origin, status and age of the wearer merely by various cross-stitching?
 Transylvania Folklore for Sale
We are a young German-run company in Sighisoara.
In addition to our folklore store, we offer Transylvanian folkloric articles such as traditional costume shirts, belts, table clothes, bedding and dresses in all shapes and colours according to old models and historical books. You may also order items through our online shop.
All products are made in Transylvania. The material is woven on original, old looms and embroidered with the old, traditional cross-stitching.
Our leather craftsman, who creates the hand-embroidered leather belts and bags exclusively for us, was already working for the Transylvanian Saxons 30 years ago.
Women’s gowns are created according to region and custom, the Transylvanian-Saxon traditional costume is intended for festival and religious occasions. Each costume includes a navy blue or black long, pleated skirt and lace petticoat.
Typical characteristics of Transylvanian traditional dress are the dominance of black and white and the lavish cross-stitching. Using the selection of material and diverse cross-stitching patterns, you can recognise the place of origin, status and age of the respective garment wearer.
The German Democratic Forum of Sighisoara presents
Hands-On Pottery
by Marian Chiș
Since March 2008 Transylvanian Ceramics from Sighisoara offers its visitors a broad spectrum of handmade modern and traditional pottery from various regions of Romania.
The small treasures made of clay and glaze are found in a small workshop, open to the public, tucked away not far from the Butcher’s Tower - at the moment, still a real insider’s tip.
During ProEtnica the ceramist Marian Chis will present his work live. We also invite you to create a small piece of artwork all your own from a lump of clay.
Background:
Pottery work has a long tradition both in and around Sighisoara. Unfortunately, many of the ancient techniques have been lost over the passage of time and must now be rediscovered or re-invented bit by bit.
Beginning two years ago, several Sighisoareans took this task on. The ceramics workshop is only the beginning of an auspicious project addressing the development of the Sighisoara citadel grounds.
The German Democratic Forum of Sighisoara is working together with the company Natoura, the Mihai-Eminescu-Trust and the Sighisoara town administration towards attracting craftsmen to settle in the town in order to complement the one-sided development in the citadel (restaurants, hotels, pensions) with a living tradition.
Over the next several years, Sighisoara is to once more receive a more authentic face by means of a craftsman tour and at the same time retain its charm as a medieval town.

Founded in autumn of 2004, „SONȚE – SUN” is the first ensemble that united representatives from at least 3 Macedonian communities from southern Romania, from the ages of 12 to 34 years. The heterogenic quality of the group is also underscored by the diversity of the repertoire which is composed of wedding circle dance „Golemata Svadba”, nine-step-circle dance „Devetka”, fast-paced circle dance „Potârciano”, traditional Macedonian folksong „Makedonsko devoice”, circle dance from the overlapping area of Romanian and Macedonian cultural traditions „Maramce-Batistuța” but also circle dances from different geographic regions: „Buvciansko”, „Paidușko”, „Berovka” or „Țârnogorka”. By participating in various folkloric festivals both domestic and abroad, the members of the folk dance ensemble „SONȚE – SUN” have transmitted the message of friendship and openness towards diversity, which characterises the Macedonian community in Romania. Together with "SONȚE – SUN” two soloists will perform on the stage of ProEtnica 2008, who are active members of the circle „Peamo” in the framework of the Association of Macedonians in Romania: Mihnea Vlădescu and Ani Irimia. Mihnea Vlădescu is the first soloist of the Macedonian community in Romania but also one of the youngest interpreters who has released a CD with traditional Macedonian songs in Macedonian and Romanian. Ani Irimia is also a member of the circle for Ethnography and Folklore „Biser Balkanski”. Lumiolar Troop
 Puppet Theatre

The LUMIOLAR troop is a part of the Petre Țuțea culture centre from Bukovina. Since 2004 we have been participating in ProEtnica with puppet theatre inspired from the fairytales of Romania’s ethnic communities. The Goat and its Kids – a fairytale of the Lipovenian Russians, The Snake – Greek folktale, The Moody Princess – Polish folktale, The Poor Man, Albanian folktale – are the pieces we have dramatised for the puppet theatre.
After the children, and not only them, have enjoyed the puppet show, the actors teach them how to make their own puppets. The puppet workshop is open to all age groups. The children of participating ensembles are invited to communicate with each other through games and also to create a theatre group. By this means they develop this project themselves within the community, the result of their activity can be presented to the audience the next time they participate in the festival. Here in the traditional puppet workshop we learn that a puppet can be brought to life by the will of the person who so desires. With glue, paper, styrofoam, paintbrushes, paint, mohair, yarn, needles and... much patience, the children will go home with puppets but also happy and with an understanding of the meaning of the game.

National Cultural Fund Administration organises an
Information session

In September 2005 a simple programme of the Ministry of Culture and Education - National Cultural Fund Administration– was transformed into a new institution, whose existence has proven to be a complete provocation from the very start: an Anglo-Saxon function in a Balkan state. The Anglo-Saxon model means the adoption of a financing mechanism which is separated from the central authority, likewise the acquisition of financing through competition.

This new institution, N.C.F.A., is called to adopt strategies which make possible the support of programmes, projects and cultural activities of national and international significance and to cover the growing need of initiators for financial means with funds which do not need to be paid back.

As an institution subordinate to the Ministry for Culture and Education, the National Cultural Fund Administration annually offers artists, public institutions, NGOs and legal persons in the sense of civil law, who carry out cultural activities, financing which does not need to be paid back.

The Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania organises

Oneg Schabbat
Person responsible: Jose Blum

Meaning and traditions of ONEG SABAT

Friday afternoons practicing Jews come home from work in order to begin preparations for Shabbat. The atmosphere is similar to preparing for a special, dearly-beloved guest.
“Shabbat is a day of celebration, full of joy and we receive it: the house is cleaned, family members dress up, the table is laid with the nicest dishes and silverware, a festive meal is prepared.“
Just like the other Jewish holidays, Shabbat begins at sunset because the first chapter of Genesis reads "and it was evening and it was morgen, the first day". The Shabbat candles are lit and a blessing is spoken over them. The purpose of the candles is to keep "Salom Bait", that is, peace in the house. Then the family participates in the services at the synagogue.
After the synagogue, the family returns home for the festive, but relaxed meal (Oneg Sabat). Prior to the meal, it is customary for the man (though the woman also has the authority) to say the Kiddush, a prayer said over the wine to sanctify Shabbat. Then the family rises in order to perform the ritual washing of hands (water is poured from a pitcher into the hands) prior to consuming the bread. The blessing over the bread is spoken – a sweet, braided bread with egg, challah. If this is missing, normal bread may also be used. Then dinner is eaten. Although there are no guidelines or customs as to what is eaten, the food is accompanied by singing (zmirot), lively discussions and a Dvar Tora (discussion on the Torah – the 5 books of Moses / Pentateuch), based on the Torah text read that week in the synagogue. It is also the point in time during which the family comes together and everyone tells what he or she experienced during the week and one can finally spend time together.
After dinner Birkat Hamazon (the blessing after the meal) is said. Although this is performed daily, on Shabbat this happens very cheerfully with a lively melody.

Vartevar
With songs and dances
from Constanța
The ensemble “Vartevar" is participating in ProEtnica for the second time with a specific Armenian song- and dance programme which presents our folkloric beauty. As one knows, a collection of songs and dances reflects the customs, history and fate of a people. This time for our artistic programme, we will not be focusing on the tragic period of Armenian history but instead perform several dances, songs and sayings which are related to the creation of the Armenian alphabet and simultaneously emphasise the beauty and sensitivity of the Armenian language and soul. The costumes chosen reflect the above through their vivid colours. With this programme we want to thank the organisers for inviting us to this happy event and congratulate them for organising such a festival but at the same time show once more that Armenians belong to this ethnic mosaic found in Romania, where we have lived for centuries in peace and complete understanding for each other.

Hellenic Union in Romania, Brașov branch presents
Louloudakia
Greek dance troop for children
and
Dionisos
Choir
From Brașov
In the beginning was only Efthimos... a group of spirited youth, lovers of music, dance and especially the customs, traditions, language and beauty of Greece. A group which has represented the Hellenic community of Brasov at numerous performances and festivals throughout the country and, of course, in Greece.
Often the youngest members of the community participated in performances of Efthimos, who presented short skits in Greek, but it was their dream to belong to a dance ensemble. They were recommended to be patient and wait until they grew older, but they followed the movements attentively, the steps of the adults, and were mesmerised by the Greek music.
As more than a game, one member of Efthimos, Codrin Rotaru, attempted to teach them some basic fundamentals and in light of the joy in their eyes, he encouraged them and introduced them to the secrets of Greek dance bit by bit.
Last year, on the basis of the results and endurance of the children, the leadership of the community decided to found a Greek dance ensemble for children. The group has become more and more well known both inside and outside of the community; all members of the community marvel at their seriousness and ambition, they are encouraged and congratulated at every performance.
The ensemble has participated in numerous performances, is constantly improving and becoming more graceful, just as little flowers do – which is also where the name comes from Louloudakia (little flower).
Certainly, today’s little flowers will grow, blossom and make up the future generation of Efthimos from Brașov.

The group is led by Stefan Corbu.
The dance troop was founded in 2003 in Craiova and its repertoire is made up of very old, original dances from the mountains of Northern Albania and is led by Nicu Popa. The music accompanying these dances is both sad as well as lively and has a singular tonality.
The initiator and organiser of these ensembles is Professor Oana Manolescu, elected representative of the Albanian minority in the Romanian parliament and chair of the League of Albanians in Romania e. V.. She translated the Albanian songs into Romanian.

Desperado
Romanian country rock and much more than just that........

The group “Desperado” was created in 1998 through the combination of three different córes. Lucian Pop (bass) and Sergiu Berindei (drums) from the band “Jesters“ – Sathmar/ Satu Mare, Calin Pop (guitar, voice), ex-Forceps from Zillenmarkt/Zalău, and Sandy Deac (keyboard, acoustic guitar, voice, producer) and Ovidiu Buhatel – producer and sound.
The two latter, also known across the country for their other musical productions (Nightlosers, Kappa), took the initiative to realise this project. Already at the first life performance, the band experienced great success both thanks to the premiere, for Romania, of this genre as well as to the “spicy” nature of their act.
The honest texts, taken from daily life, the general irony directed against alcohol consumption and love affairs, original American costumes (cowboy hats, boots, vests) and last but not least short, funny skits told with humour between the tunes, create the „Desperado“ unique recipe for success
A “Desperado” performance contains, in addition to their own well-known original tunes in Romanian (Promit că nu mai beau (I promise not to drink anymore), Am cazanul meu (I have my flask), Bețivan ratat (Drunken Loser), Nu le dau carnetul (I won’t give’m my license), Unde pleci și când te-ntorci (Where are you going and when will be you back?), Suntem de la țară (We’re from the country), Cuplul ideal (The ideal couple)...), also famous songs in English by the Eagles, Tracy Byrd, Travis Tritt, Billy Ray Cyrus, Eric Clapton, ZZ Top.... The band took its name „Desperado“ from the legendary band „The Eagles“ and their famous song which characterises them: lawless, drifters, broken promises, and the boys have passed on their experiences in nuimerous concerts throughout the country. Time has passed but they have not broken up. The second album is called "Oameni de treabă" (Guys of the World) and contains suggestive titles like: "Lenea" (Laziness), "Week-end la pădure" (Weekend in the Woods), "Nu-ți fie frică de vaccin" (Don’t be Scared of Shots), "Nu sunt de vină" (I’m Innocent) or "Oameni de treabă" (Guys of the World). They have released two other albums, "La fel ca tata" (Same as my Pa) and "Greatest SHits" (sic!).

Why far away? Why not at home?
Person responsible: István Menyhárt
Many young people, hoping for a more pleasant life, are leaving their home. Whether we are talking about the emigration problem or only about the „easy“ job search in more developed regions of the country, both phenomenons lead to a weakening in and change to local communities. Is there nothing one can do? Is this just normal? Can something be done to stop this process? Do you know of examples in which, as a result of local initiatives, the youth have returned home?

14:00
The Union of Croates in Romania organise a round-table discussion on the topic:

The Banat – A Model for Interethnic Co-Habitation
Person responsible: Gheorghe Iancov
from Reșița, Caraș-Severin county
The question of interethnic co-habitation which is the main topic for ethnic discussions for this year’s "ProEtnica" events is a hot topic in connection with the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.
One of the founding principles of the E.U. is that of the diversity of cultures, customs, beliefs and borders; a principle which is fully realised in Banat daily life.
This way of life, that is to act in daily life in the framework of communities with a sense for understanding the „others“ is the result of a year-long tradition whose foundations can be found in the legislatoin of the reform enlightenment of the Habsburg authorities of the 17th century.

The German Democratic Forum from Sighișoara presents
Lecture
Linguistic Transylvanian-Luxembourgian Relations (Commonalities and Differences)
Dr. Sigrid Haldenwang,
Reseach Institute for Social Sciences, Sibiu
The linguistic singularities prove Transylvanian-Saxon to be a central-west German dialect, closely related to middle-Franconian (which is spoken in exactly 240 local dialects). Over the course of its development in Transylvania it was also influenced by east-middle German and high German and words were taken from Hungarian and Romanian. The most important commonalities are shared with the dialects from the linguistic area of Cologne to Trier, as well as with Luxembourgian. The lecture offers arguments for the fact that the small region of Middle Franconia – Luxembourg did not constitute the core and main region of Transylvanian German immigrants. Today one believes that the largest and most important medieval island of German language in the arc of the Carpathians is Transylvanian-Saxon, because it has existed for over 850 years, into our time today. It can be concluded from the research thus far that the Transylvanian Saxons migrated to Transylvania in several stages and came from various regions of Germany. When linguistic Transylvanian-Luxembourgian relationships are discussed, Luxembourgian must be categorised only as a structure of middle-Franconian dialects. The commonalities and differences in various linguistic areas bring our attention to the fact that Transylvanian-Saxon is a typical colonist dialect which lives, for the most part, from the wealth of inherited words. Added to this is the centuries-long separation from the German linguistic region, so that here in Transylvania a method of communication of a new people developed thanks to blending and compensation.

"Adela si Agnetha" (Adele and Agnetha) is the story of two strong women from a village from the Transylvanian highlands. The film, produced by Geo Scripcariu, follows the Saxon and Rroma families from Transylvanian and alternately presents two families from the village of Merghindeal (Mergeln) close to the city of Agnetheln. Adela is the Rroma wife of a Saxon and Agnetha the Saxon wife of a Rroma. This is no soap-opera but rather an anthropological-ethnic-cultural study in the form of a documentary film.

With this programme we want to thank the organisers for inviting us to this happy event and congratulate them for organising such a festival but at the same time show once more that Armenians belong to this ethnic mosaic found in Romania, where we have lived for centuries in peace and complete understanding for each other .

Society of Aromanian Culture presents the dance group with soloists
IHOLU
from Constanța
The folklore ensemble „IHOLU" from the Aromanian community of Romania, the Constanța branch, was founded in Summer of 2004. In the founding year it participated in the ETNO FESTIVAL „MALOVISHTEA 2004", in Macedonia, from which it returned with great success. The ensemble „IHOLU" consists of 18 members from the Aromanian community of Romania (youth from 16 to 30 years). This folklore group emphasises that only together can we develop culturally, that only „deadun" (=together) can we ensure that language, culture and tradition are maintained over time; in our artistic performances we weave together specific songs and dances of the Aromanians, Gramustians and Farsherots. Cultural events which the ensemble of the Aromanian community from Romania, the Constanța branch, has participated in include the international festival "Etni Fair - Play", Vãlenii de Munte, Sinaia 2005, "Agenția de vise", together with the town hall of the city the festival "Sinaia Forever" dealt with the topic "Unitate prin diversitate - multiculturalitate" (Unity through Diversity – Multiculturality). „Iholu" participated in various local and national TV broadcasts of station Antena 1, PRO TV, TVRM, Favorit. "IHOLU" meets every Sunday at 13:00 at the offices of the Constanța branch to rehearse. These Sundays are very instructive for the young Aromanians because in this way we do not forget our heritage, traditions and language, we do not forget who we are: „ Aromanians".

18:00
Democratic Union of Slovaks and Czechs from Romania presents
Salasan Folk Ensemble
from Nădlac, Arad county
Our founding as an artist group representing the D.U.S.C.R. was based on the need to conserve Slovakian folkloric tradition in its original form and pass it on. This procedure required a dose of professionalism, which in turn requires continuing work and learning about the past autochthonous values of Slovakian folkloric culture in Romania. In 1999 the ensemble Salasan was founded together with a choir and in 2003 the dance ensemble was added, consisting of students from the high school in Nădlac. Thus the folkloric ensemble came into being which today is made up of 50 members. The ensemble deals with songs, dances and customs of the Slovakians from Nădlac and Romania which it has performed successfully multiple times in events both domestic and abroad (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia). Today, having existed for 5 year, we are in a position to present with honour, a tradition which is a part of the cultural tradition of this country. We are a group of people who love values and believe it is our calling to give a part of our soul to those surrounding us.

The Community of Lipovenian-Russians from Romania presents the Choir and Dance Ensemble
Dunaiskie Rozî and Tihii Dunai
from Brăila
The community of Lipovenian Russians from Brăila is one of the largest communities in the country. The Lipovenian Russians from Brăila live in a compact area called Pisc, which was originally a village near the town but has now become a living, historical museum of ethnicities in the centre of the town.
The ensemble was founded on the initiative of the Lipovenian Russians who wanted their traditions to be conserved and continued. These were passed on to the youth of the community. Today the ensemble is made up of both adults as well as children who continue the tradition. Because the Danube is both the centre of attraction as well as the means for existence, the ensemble’s name and repertoire are closely connected to the name of the river - Dunaiskie Rozî (Danube Roses) and Tihii Dunai (The Quiet Danube).

19:00
Union of Hellenes from Romania, Brașov branch, presents
Louloudakia
Greek Dance Group for Children
and
Dionisos
Choir

The repertoire consists of dances representative for the Croatian minority, the melodies performed emphasise the beauty of the folkloric culture and the specific traditions of the Croatian minority in Romania. The joy, rhythm and the music, expressed through traditional dances, represent a prime ethnographic document so that everyone can create a picture for themselves of the emotional wealth of the Croatian minority. Over the course of the years the group has participated in countless local, national and international festival.

The Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania presents
Extraordinary concert:
 A. G. Weinberger
In Romania it is impossible to talk about the blues without mentioning this extraordinary musician of international reputation, AG Weinberger. His efforts, performed with missionary-like zeal, to establish this genre on the market, as well as the mentality and attitude towards life which the “blue” carries with it, have given him the status of the catalyst of this musical movement in Romania.
Born in Oradea, guitarist, singer, harmonica player, producer of radio shows and albums, initiator of the club-movement, he is a trusted authority in the branch.
After the borders were opened in 1990 he was offered the opportunity to tour in Germany, Switzerland, Israel, Turkey and Hungary.
In 1996 he went to the USA for the first time, to Memphis, Tennessee, intending to make contact with the American blues industry. Afterwards, in 1997, he performed at the Piața Universității (University Square) during the state visit of the American president, Bill Clinton. He was personally congratulated by Clinton. The next year he was in Memphis at BLUESTOCK-Festival once again, the only non-American permitted at the famous event. In 1998 A.G. set up the foundation BlueSylvania.
1999 was a year full of touring during which the notoriety of the artist reached its climax.
In May 2000, he left for “cultural asylum in the United States” as he likes to say. For four years he worked doggedly in the music business in America, proving that a Romanian guitarist can also be successful in the same place as the famous B. B. King. At the beginning he played in clubs in Chicago, thereafter in New York, where he performed in famous clubs such as Decade, Bitter End, Red Lion, and others. Then he toured with a country singer from Nashville, with whom he travelled throughout all of America, almost 30 thousand miles. Finally he landed in Las Vegas, where he played in clubs and casinos and gave guitar lessons. About his experiences A.G. said: “In the USA I learned – actually it was suggested that I do so – to say what I think. In America you develop yourself, however you are. Believe in yourself and don’t let anyone pull one over on you! It doesn’t matter whether it is better or worse, be proud of your personality. You have to be proud of it
.“
In May of 2004 he moved to Lausanne, Switzerland where he writes songs for the new album.
The first American album, signed A.G., was recorded beginning of 2005, in Nashville, Tennessee, produced by Tom Hambridge (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny Winter, Bonnie Riatt, Susan Tedeschi, Delbert McClinton...).

Each participant should emphasise what can be categorized as positive in the partners’ culture and is to be emulated and what is incorrect, from the perspective of his or her ethnic community. He is willing to accept Christian humility. Would he wash the feet of his partner? We will give priority to candidates with the identical name but different ethnicities (i.e. János-Ioan-Johannes-...) or when they communicate in the native language of the respective discussion partner.

LILICI DITU MAIU
from Constanța
The association „Lilici ditu maiu" has a children’s ensemble of very tender age under its patronage, which represents a true spectacle. From poems about songs, dance and traditions, these children, not yet of school-age, do not hesitate to perform on stage and amuse us with their show. All this is possible due to the guidance played by Mrs. Zoe Gica, also president of the association Lilici ditu Maiu. The support of the parents is likewise crucial and demonstrates how well an activity of this sort, with wonderful children who have so much to offer can be undertaken. This children’s group has participated in many performances, festivals, private concerts as well as international engagements where they have returned home with awards.  The repertoire of the ensembles is made up of traditional music and their own compositions, written in the spirit of ancient music. The group used various old collections and manuscripts as its musical sources, integrated Balkan influences in its style, but also authentic folklore and ancient court or town music. Many sounds can be identified in their music, which unite, virtuously and inventively, a Byzantium atmosphere with the folk ethos from all corners of the world.
Einuiea has performed concerts in Bucharest and elsewhere throughout the country, at uniquely cultural locations: museums, clubs, art galleries, bookstores, antique shops, book fairs, children’s centres, but also fitting festivals. They have performed in Japan, Turkey, Austria, Israel and Belgium.
A new project is original music, performed live in unconventional spaces, as accompaniment to silent film screenings. The ensemble is active in the Bucharest theatre scene and tours in Germany and Spain. It has participated in the international Radio project MultiKulti from Delta RFI, as well as the UNESCO project „Cultural Heritage – A Bridge Towards a Shared Future”.

Extraordinary concert
Hara
HARA was founded in May 2000 in Cluj-Napoca, on the initiative of the English teacher Flavius Buzila who was determined to introduce new, fresh breathe into Romanian music. The group was noticed immediately due to the original, extremely inspiring work, which very naturally combines elements of alternative rock, electro-pop, Celtic sounds and Romanian folklore into a unique, personal interpretation. The group has released 3 LP-s, AIUREA(2001), MAI FRUMOASA(2003), O ZI(2004) and the album with traditional Romanian Christmas carols MARLIN, DARLIN-PAIS`PE COLINDE S`O STRIGATURA(2006), which received many awards from the media (best single 2003,2004, best creation 2005, best album-2004,2005,2006).
The first international recognition came in December 2006 with third place (of 50) with the piece O ZI at the most important international creativity contest VH1-Song of the Year; HARA is the first of the Romanian group to receive an award from the famous television company.
In a country dominated by superficiality and playback, HARA has excelled through live concerts, vivid and unpredictable, artistically profound, to the delight of an audience made up of thousands. The group has given a record number of concerts also during the discography phase.
In 2007 there were also concerts given abroad, HARA successfully represented Romania in Brussels, Veliko Tarnovo (Bulgaria) and even at the European Cup 2008 in Vienna and Salzburg where the group’s performance was named the “best live show of the culture programme“ by the Austrian local administration.
The group has also made a name for itself through active involvement in numerous charity and anti-discrimination projects, the five members have been official ambassadors of the S.O.S. children’s villages of Romania since 2006.
In the context Proetnica 2008, HARA will introduce the 5th album of its career in Sighisoara, INTERETNIK – a multicultural musical mosaic with great resonance for a broad audience, inspired from blending Romanian folklore with the music of ethnic minorities.
The project is to promote interethnic communication adn equal opportunity and the members of the group (Flavius Buzila-song, guitar, Marius Astilean-violin, Vlad Cretu-guitar, voice, Sabin Tarabega-drums, percussion, voice, Catalin Florescu-samplers, sound)have prepared an explosive music, light and video effect performance during which a video is also to be recorded for a new piece from this LP SHIKANA.
